6 power project workers injured as tunnel collapses

POONCH, Aug 18: Six workers of Parnai Hydel Power Project in Surankote were injured when a portion of tunnel collapsed today.
Police sources said that mishap took place inside the tunnel at project site around 11.20 am when the workers, mostly from outside the State were on the job. A portion of tunnel collapsed when the work was going on with the help of machines and manually.  The  workers were buried under the debris as land sliding took place inside.
The other workers on the job inside the tunnel, sounded alert and immediately all the trapped workers were rescued  and were rushed to Surankote hospital.  While four were undergoing treatment  there at SDH Surankote, two seriously injured were referred to GMC Hospital Jammu.  They were identified as Sanjeev Kumar, son of Makhan Lal, resident of West Bengal and Asgar Ali, son of Shabir Ali, resident of Assam.
Four admitted to SDH Surankote are- Anwar Hussain, son of Muktiar Hussain; Ghulam Hussain, son of Mohin Hussain,  both hailing from Assam; Mahesh Katrik, son of Bapta Katrik from West Bengal and Maqbool Hussain from Assam.  The police have taken cognizance of the matter.
It is pertinent to mention here that work on this 37.5 MW capacity multi-purpose project was started in April 2014  and is expected to be completed  by March next year. This power project besides providing power supply to the twin districts of Rajouri –Poonch  is expected to cater to the irrigation need of the vast land in  Surankote and Mendhar area of district Poonch.
