SRINAGAR, Jan 25: Nearly 60 walnut trees were axed by unidentified miscreants at Bemnipora village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district. The District Administration has ordered an enquiry into the chopping incident.
Reports said the unidentified miscreants, carrying saws and cutters, in the dead of the night chopped down these trees. The locals of the village said not only these miscreants chopped down these 60 walnut trees but also cut two dozen trees separately at an adjoining village.
The locals said even as they informed concerned officials but they paid no heed to their plea and allegedly facilitated the axing of these trees. They said the trees axed by the miscreants were several decades old and accused District Administration of “being hand-in-glove with these miscreants”.
Reports said the Deputy Commissioner Shopian Ghulam Muhammad Dar has ordered a probe into the chopping down of the trees and assured strict action against the persons involved in the crime. Police have also registered a case in this regard at Shopian Police Station, the reports added.
Pertinently, more than 50 trees in an orchard were similarly axed down by unidentified miscreants in Bandipora district of north Kashmir couple of days ago.
