61-tie knot in Srinagar mass marriage

Srinagar June 15: A modest mass wedding in Srinagar today saw the union of up to 61 disadvantaged couples from various areas of Kashmir.
The event, organized by the local non-government organization (NGO) “We the Helping Hand Foundation,” marked the latest successful event in a series of mass marriages held over the past few years.
“Today, 61 couples have tied the knot, and we have been consistently organizing such weddings for many years now. By the grace of God, we have become the first NGO in the region to arrange the largest number of mass marriages. We believe in humanity, and the overwhelming support from people has made this possible,” Umar Wani, the chairman of the NGO, said.

He shared his satisfaction in witnessing couples from all districts of the valley, regardless of their sect, participate in the event.
Wani shed light on the need for such marriages, referring to a 2022 survey that revealed alarming statistics. “The survey indicated that nearly 50,000 girls in Jammu and Kashmir have crossed the marriage age, while approximately 1.5 lakh men have become over-aged for marriage. Jammu and Kashmir top the list of states with the highest number of unmarried women and men,” he said.
He urged people to choose simplicity, as the prevalence of extravagant weddings has contributed to delaying marriages. “As a Muslim-majority state, it is essential that this issue does not persist. I request everyone to opt for simple weddings, allowing more people to find their life partners,” he said.
He encouraged people to reach out to the NGO through their social media page.
