Surgical cases were pending due to COVID-19: Pole

SRINAGAR, May 18: At least 2100 backlog surgeries were conducted during a week-long Mega Health Camp organized by Rotary International in collaboration with the Divisional Administration, Kashmir and the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir (DHSK).
While giving details about it, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir P.K. Pole said that a week-long Mega Health Camp was organised by Divisional Administration Kashmir in collaboration with Rotary Club India, from 11 to 18 May 2022 across 4 hospitals of Kashmir division namely GMC Baramulla, SDH Kupwara, SDH Sopore and District Hospital Ganderbal.
He said that for the Mega Health Camp, patients were registered from 5 districts of central and north Kashmir, which include Ganderbal, Budgam, Bandipora, Baramula and Kupwara.
He said that these patients were screened by the health staff of the concerned districts and those found eligible for surgeries were shifted to four designated hospitals according to the scheduled date for various elective surgeries.
The Mega Health Camp was planned by Divisional Administration Kashmir to cover the pending surgical cases which were deferred due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pole said that solving real problems takes real commitment and vision which this organization has in its manifesto, while the Mega Health Camp was attended by 43 renowned International surgeons and volunteers from the Rotary Club who were supported by an additional Human Resource of around 450 persons in the form of Surgeons, Anaesthetics, paramedics and support staff deputed by Directorate of Health Services Kashmir & GMC Baramula for this project.
As per details, so far during the camp 2120 surgeries have been performed which include 359 Gynaecological Surgeries, 171 General surgeries, 538 Eye Surgeries, 38 Orthopaedic Surgeries, 53 ENT surgeries, 624 Minor Surgeries and 337 Dental surgeries.
“These surgeries were a great success and there were zero complications, which is a moment of pride and describes the quality of work performed by the Surgeons of Rotary Club India and the assisting staff,” Director Health Services, Kashmir, Dr Mushtaq Ahmad Rather said.
“And lastly I would like to Congratulate Rotary Club India for their selfless services provided during this Mega Health camp and look forward to future endeavours for such health camps in the Valley,” Pole said.
Pole said that these surgeries have been conducted at 14-15 operation theatres, working for the last one week from morning 7 am to evening 8 pm.
Dr Rajeev Pradhan, International Rotary Governor, said that the club has been working in different countries and is ensuring better health for the people.
“After northern and central Kashmir, the camp will be organized in South Kashmir on the request by Lieutenant Governor in days to come,” he said.
DHSK on the occasion said that there were nearly 8000 backlog surgeries due to the third wave of Covid-19 and in the last one week, over 2100 major surgeries were conducted. “We have received directions from the Administration, to clear the backlog of surgeries. We will do that soon,” he said.
Further as per details, during these 7 days, 98 Gynaecological Surgeries were carried out at GMC, Baramulla, 54 general surgeries, and 67 ophthalmic surgeries apart from several other surgeries, similarly at SDH Sopore, 82 Gynaecological Surgeries were carried out in 7 days, 36 general surgeries, and 152 ophthalmic surgeries apart from other several other surgeries. At DH Ganderbal, 83 Gynaecological Surgeries, 60 general surgeries and 120 ophthalmic surgeries were done. At SDH Kupwara, 141 Gynaecological Surgeries, 21 general surgeries and nearly 200 ophthalmic surgeries were done since May 11.
