RAMBAN, Feb 5: In a devastating fire that broke out in a vegetable and fruit market in Banihal 72 Kiosks were destroyed.
Officials said that fire broke out at around 2 am today in a Kiosk at the designated vegetable and fruit market in Banihal town and spread to other Kiosks taking about 72 Kiosks in its grip.
On getting information locals, police, fire tenders and Army personnel rushed to the spot and launched a joint fire-fighting operation to douse the flames.
The fire was brought under control after a tough struggle but not before the blaze has gutted 72 Kiosks of fruit and vegetable.
Assistant Director (AD) of Fire and Emergency Services Ramban, Sahil Bandral said two fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire. Click here to watch video
He said one fire tender was summoned from Fire Station Banihal and another from the nearby district of Kulgam, Kashmir and it took three hours for fire fighters to douse the flames.
He informed that after hectic efforts the fire was brought under control by 5 am and there was no loss of life or injury to any person in the fire incident.
Local political leaders and Market Association Banihal have expressed shock over the damage to property worth lakhs of rupees of poor vendors in the massive fire incident.
They have demanded adequate compensation and rehabilitation for the affected persons.
Police sources informed that it appears that the fire broke out due to an electric short circuit but investigations were underway to ascertain the exact cause of fire.
