KATRA, June 4: A 75-year-old man with brain tumor got a new lease of life at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Kakrayal.
The patient was presented with weakness of left hand at the Hospital. On MRI, brain tumor was found in right posterior frontal region. In such a case administering General Anesthesia could cause paralysis in the patient, therefore, Dr Mahander Pal, Neurosurgeon at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital performed awake craniotomy (an operation in which brain surgery is done keeping patient totally awake).
The procedure was done by Dr Mahander Pal with Dr Sumit Bloria under the guidance of Dr JP Singh, Clinical Director and senior most neurosurgeon. The patient was given local anaesthesia and the surgery was performed by monitoring patient movements and speech. The surgery was stopped when tumor was completely taken out.
Patient is healthy and discharged after 5 days. Such awake surgeries are performed in the country’s top most centers for brain tumors in critical areas. These surgeries are a high risk surgeries where even a millimeter damage could cause paralysis, loss of speech or coma, hence, the surgeons took utmost care to ensure the safety of the patient.
