79 graft cases against Ministers, officers

SRINAGAR, Oct 9: At least 15 cases of corruption or misuse of official position have been registered against State politicians including four sitting Ministers before the State Accountability Commission, while 64 such cases registered against top bureaucrats and Ministers in Vigilance Organization and Crime Branch, the State Government told the Legislative Assembly in a written reply today.
The Ministers, who have cases pending before the anti-corruption commission, are Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather, Public Health Engineering Minister Taj Mohi-ud-din, Public Enterprises Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed and Cooperatives Minister Manohar Lal Sharma.
Former Ministers and legislators facing charges of corruption include sitting PDP MLA Abdul Gaffar Sofi, sitting Independent MLA Hakim Mohammad Yasin, former Minister from Congress party Mangat Ram Sharma, former Congress party Minister Suman Lata Bhagat, former Congress Party Minister Gulchain Singh Charak and Khem Lata Wakhloo.
Sayeed, Wakhloo and Charak  have more than one case pending before the Commission. Proceedings in six of the cases have been stayed by the State High Court after the accused persons filed writ petitions. While one case has been reserved for judgement by the Commission, the other cases are at various stages of inquiry.
In a separate question asked by the expelled BJP MLA, Chaman Lal Gupta about names of the IAS and KAS officers against whom Vigilance cases have been registered, the State Government in written reply said that 59 cases have been registered against bureaucrats of the State in various corruption cases. These include top serving and retired bureaucrats of the state.
The Government has said that sanction for prosecution has been granted is 43 graft cases while 40 cases have been chargesheeted, out of which 6 are sub-judice.
