JAMMU, June 27: Eight people were killed and 16 others were injured in three different road accidents that took place in the mountainous districts of Doda and Ramban after the vehicles they were travelling-in skidded off the road and landed in deep gorges.
Five people were killed and 12 others were injured when a vehicle they were travelling in fell into a gorge on Bhadarwah-Pathankot road in Doda on Tuesday.
Sources informed that the ill fated vehicle of Trax make bearing registration number JK06-5071 met with an accident near Guldanda leading to on the spot death of five people and injuries to 12 others.
Immediately after the accident a team of 118 RCC BRO came to the rescue of the injured and helped in shifting them to the nearby hospital.
BRO pressed into service a rescue team including an ambulance to shift the injured people with the help of locals and cops to nearby hospital where five of them were pronounced dead upon arrival while the other 12 injured were receiving medical treatment.
The deceased were identified as Ghulam Nabi, son of Mohd Atto, resident of Ludna, Doda; Vinod Kumar, son of Lt. Mehar Chand, resident of Monda; Firdos Ahmed, son of Ghulam Ahmed, resident of Bani; Barkatullah, son of Ghulam Mohd, resident of Babrobal and Shish Chand, son of Balia, resident of Kanthar Basoli.
The injured were identified as Irshad Ahmed, son of Abdul Ahad, resident of Doda; Nazir Ahmed, son of Abdul Samad Mir, resident of Gundna Doda; Naresh Kumar, son of Madan Lal, resident of Bani; Rafiq Ahmed, son of Abdul Rehman, resident of Doda; Mohd Shafiq, son of Abdul Aziz, resident of Doda; Tariq Ahmad, son of, Farooq Ahmed, resident of Nalthi; Mohd Abdullah, son of Mohd Naik, resident of Ludna Doda; Bilal Ahmed, son of Ghulam Hussain, resident of Ludna Doda; Sadiq Ali, son of Farooq Ahmed, resident of Kudola Doda; Riaz Ahmed, son of Manzoor Ahmed, resident of Gundna Doda and Nadeem son of Abdul Rashid, resident of Bikthryan Doda.
In another accident that took place in Bhalla area of Doda in wee hours, a car of Alto make bearing registration number JK06 1958 fell into a deep gorge leaving one person on board dead and four others injured.
The deceased has been identified as Javed Iqbal, 28, son of Farid Ahmed, resident of Changa Gandoh.
The car was coming from Gandoh and was moving towards Bhadarwah.
SSP Doda, Abdul Qayoom when contacted said that an accident took place in Bhalla area in which a car of Maruti make fell in gorge and one person was died and four others received minor injuries.
He informed that in the second accident which took place today a vehicle coming from Bani carrying labourers working on a road project fell in gorge killing 5 persons and inflicting injuries to 12 others of which a critical one was airlifted to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu.
The SSP said that apparent cause for the accident seems over speeding of the vehicle due to which it couldn’t be controlled by the driver.
He said that Police have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections and started investigations.
Meanwhile, in district Ramban, two persons were killed and one injured when the car they were travelling-in skidded off the road and fell into a gorge in Rampedi, Chambalwass area of Banihal today.
Sources said that the rashly driven car of Maruti make bearing registration number JK02N-1856 was on way to Banihal from Ramsoo and it skidded off the road and fell into a gorge in Rampadi, Chambalwass area of Banihal on Jammu Srinagar National Highway leaving two persons dead on the spot and one injured.
Soon after the accident rescue teams reached the spot and shifted the dead and injured to SDH Banihal.
Police identified the deceased persons as Mohd Afzal Malik, 32, son of Gull Mohd Malik and Mohd Azmat, 55, son of Gull Mohd, both, residents of Sarbagni, Ramsoo, district Ramban.
Police identified the injured as Shabir Ahmed Malik, 35, son of Gull Mohd Malik, resident of Sarbagni, Ramsoo.
He was admitted at SDH Banihal.
When contacted SDPO Banihal Nisar Khoja said that two persons were killed in the road accident and one injured was shifted to GMC Anantnag.
He said that police have registered a case in this regard under the relevant sections of law and started investigations.
Expressing grief and shock over the loss of lives in road accidents, Union MoS in PMO, Dr. Jitendra Singh tweeted that he spoke to DC Doda, Vishesh Mahajan after receiving information about the unfortunate casualty of five persons in a road accident on Bhadarwah-Pathankot road and injuries to 12 others.
“All further assistance, as required will be provided. I am in constant touch,” Dr. Singh maintained in his tweet.
Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha has expressed grief over the loss of lives in unfortunate road accidents in Doda and Ramban.
In a tweet, the Lt Governor said, “Extremely pained by the loss of lives in unfortunate road accidents in Doda and Ramban.”
He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for early recovery to the injured and directed the DCs to ensure all necessary assistance to the affected.
The Lt Governor also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 5 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 to the seriously injured.
Democratic Progressive Azad Party chairman, Ghulam Nabi Azad has expressed shock and grief over the loss of lives in tragic road accident in Bhaderwah.
In a condolence message, Azad said: “I send my heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved families and wish those injured a speedy recovery.”
He stressed on the administration to provide compensation to the next of kin of those killed in the accident and those who got injured.
Azad also prayed for speedy recovery of injured persons.
