8 killed, 9 injured as Sumo falls into gorge

SRINAGAR, Sept 24: Eight passengers of an ill-fated Tata Sumo were killed while 9 others were injured today in a mishap when the vehicle skidded off the road and rolled down in deep gorge in North Kashmir border area of Tangdar.
Police said a Tata Sumo bearing registration number JK01P/8632 skidded off the road and rolled down into deep gorge at Cobra Nallah, Toll Post, in Tangdar area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
The Sumo was on its way from Tangdar to village Jabdi near the Line of Control, when it met with an accident resulting in death of eight passengers and injuries to nine others travelling in the Sumo.
The injured have been shifted to hospital for treatment. Six of eight dead have been identified as Amir-ud-din Sheikh son of Sadar-ud-Din Sheikh, Nadir Sheikh son of Faqir Mohammad Sheikh and Mohammad Arif son of Mohammad Yasin residents of Haji Turra; Altaf Hussain Shah son of Mohammad Shah, Abdul Rashid Guree son of Suliaman Guree, Rafaqat Ahmad son of Qaisar-ud-Din, Sajjad Ahmad son of Aalamdin residents of Jabda.
A local unit of the Army rushed to the spot to carry out the rescue operations with the help of local people.
Police said a Santro Car bearing registration number JK11/7444 on way from Qazigund to Anantnag, hit and injured a pedestrian Gulzar Ahmad Hajam son of Ghulam Rasool, resident of Gasipora at Mir Bazar, Kulgam today. He was shifted to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Police have registered a case in this regard.
In another accident, a Tata 207 vehicle bearing registration number JK01M/8446 hit and injured Hajra, 75, wife of Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Najar resident of Aishmuqam Anantnag at Lazbal, Anantnag. The injured has been shifted to hospital for treatment.
In yet another accident, motorcyclist Bashir Ahmad Wagay, 50, son of Abdul Gani resident of Gasrena was injured when he lost control over his motorcycle and it skidded on the road at Arigantnoo, Kulgam. The injured has been shifted to hospital for treatment. A case has been registered in this regard.
