KARGIL, Aug 10: Total 85 candidates are in fray for the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) elections scheduled to be held on August 22, 2013.
During the period of filing of nominations from July 27 to August 3, 180 nomination papers were received by various Returning Officers. During scrutiny two nomination papers were rejected by Returning Officers and 95 papers were withdrawn by the candidates.
Two candidates namely Aga Syed Hassan from Saliskote and Mohammad Amir from Stakchay Khangral constituencies were declared elected un-opposed and now 85 candidates from 24 constituencies will contest the polls.
Out of 85, 12 candidates belong to BJP, 17 Congress, 12 NC, 8 PDP and 36 candidates will contest as independent. The entire process will be completed on September 2 with the formation of new Hill Council.
Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil came into existence in August 2003 and is comprised of 26 elected members and 4 nominated members.
A total of 257 Polling Stations have been identified and 13 Polling Stations each have been established exclusively for male and female voters. Shaday is the highest Polling Station with an altitude of 13,850 ft. and Hundarman Mal is the lowest Polling Station with an altitude of 8,800 ft.
Akchamal Polling Station of Poyen Constituency has the highest number of voters and Phema is the polling station with lowest number of voters. Five polling stations will require helicopter service for transportation of men and material.
Sixty seven Polling Stations have been categorized as hyper sensitive, 85 Polling Stations as sensitive and 105 Polling Stations as normal. (KNS)
