9 booked under COPTA; one held with liquor

RAMBAN, Nov 27: Police today booked nine persons under Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COPTA) for smoking in public places.
Police spokesman said that continuing drive against persons smoking in public places, Ramban Police today booked four persons, who were smoking in public places, under 4/21 COPTA. They were produced in the court of law and accordingly fine of Rs 200 each was imposed on them.
They have been identified as Sambal Dass, son of Ishar Dass of Nashri, Raghu Nath, son of Ram Saran of Neera, Parvaiz Ahmed, son of Nazir Ahmed of Chachwa and Nartar Singh, son of Balak Raj of Ganotte.
Similarly, Gool and Batote Police caught five persons while smoking in public places. They are Nazir Ahmed, son of Qadir Gujjar of Dachan, Gulam Mohd, son of Habibullah of Salblla, Mohd Shafi, son of Mohd Abdullah of Gool, Ashiq Ali, son of Ghulam Mohd of Gool and Surinder Singh, son of Rattan Singh of Doda.
It is pertinent to mention here that SP Ramban, Anil Magotra has issued directions to all the SHOs of the district to launch vigorous drive against smoking at public places.
Meanwhile, Ramban Police arrested one person from Patnitop and recovered 49 pouches of J&K Excise liquor from his possession.
The accused has been identified as Surjeet, son of Sham Lal of Sanasar. He has been booked under 48-A Excise Act.
