Srinagar, June 24: A 9-day long Urdu Book Exhibition today concluded at Kashmir University. In this regard, the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) New Delhi organized a valedictory function at Ibn Khaldoon auditorium of Allama Iqbal Library.
The concluding function was presided over by Vice Chancellor Kashmir University Prof. Talat Ahmad while as Urdu writer Prof. Mohammad Zaman Azurdah attended the event as chief guest.
Director NCPUL Dr. Aqeel Ahmad, Registrar Kashmir University Prof. Nisar Ahmad, Librarian Allama Iqbal Library Prof. G. M. Peerzada poet and translator Sultanul Haq Shaheedi, JK Urdu Council Secretary Javed Matjee, Heads of various departments, university teachers, Scholars, students, NCPUL officials, Participants of book exhibition and others were also present on this occasion.
The winner students of different competitions belonging to various universities, colleges and schools were awarded trophies, certificates and books. These students had won different competitions held on the side lines of book exhibition.
The winners of inter school debate and poetry competition held by Iqbal High school Soura in collaboration with NCPUL, were awarded by VC and other dignitaries. The school level winners include Arbish Manzoor of Islamia Higher Secondary, School, Rajouri Kadal and Minhaj Jan of Muwest school. Both took first position in debate and poetry competition respectively.
Maniya Shafat of City Central School and Aniqa Farooq of Iqbal High School Soura took second position while as Tahoora Shakeel of Iqbal High School and Darakhshan Fatima of Govt. Girls Hr. Sec. School Zadibal received awards for third position in these competitions. Winners of inter college debate Aqsa Manzoor Of Salfia Banat, Azad Nabi Dar of Deptt. Of Urdu, CUK and Parvez Iqbal of Salfia college were also awarded for their performance.
Director NCPUL Dr. Aqeel while speaking on the occasion said that 23 cultural, literary and educational programs were held during 9 days of book exhibition. He revealed that Urdu books worth Rs 50 lakh were sold during the exhibition. NCPUL stall alone fetched sales of Rs 5.5 lakh during the exhibition.
He expressed the hope that Kashmir will emerge as a new epicenter of Urdu Language. He announced setting up of a sale center of NCPUL publications within the University campus.
In his presidential address Vice Chancellor Kashmir University Prof. Talat ahmad said that special attention is required to be given towards protection and promotion of Urdu in the state. He assured NCPUL Director of all help in this endeavor to popularize Urdu in Jammu & Kashmir
