90 militants active in N Kashmir: IGP

SRINAGAR, May 23: Inspector General of Police Kashmir range, Muneer Ahmad Khan, said today that 90 militants are active in North Kashmir and there are no reports of enhanced infiltration from across the Line of Control (LoC) into Kashmir.
Speaking to reporters, Khan said that around 90 militants are active in North Kashmir. He said whether a common man or a cop joins militancy they will be equally treated as per the law. “A few of them, who have been lured into this (militancy), whenever anyone – whether a policeman or a common man – goes that way, he becomes a criminal and treatment for either of them is simple and there would be no differentiation. If he is a militant, he is a militant and that is all”, he said.
The IGP said that Baramulla sector has been traditional route for infiltration and denied any increase in infiltration. “Baramulla sector has always been a traditional route for infiltration. We have reports that there are attempts of infiltration, but we have no reports there is enhanced infiltration”, he said.
Khan said that Army deployed along the LoC is alert and have foiled infiltration bids. “… I am happy to tell you that our Army there is ready to face that and they have been facing it. Last week, there was an infiltration in Nowgam sector but it was foiled and four militants were killed. Similarly, there have been attempts of infiltration at few other places in the same sector but the Army successfully sent them back and foiled their attempts”, he said.

The IGP said that the FIR against Army for using a man as human shield will not be quashed and investigations will continue. “The investigation will carry on, the FIR has not been quashed or something. The investigation will be done and its result will be shared. Whatever comes out in the investigation, is a separate matter, but investigation will take place and it would be seen what is right and what is wrong”, he said.
Khan appealed students and their parents and teachers not to let children in indulgence of bad acts. “With regard to children coming on streets, I appeal to children, their parents and their respected teachers, from my heart to woo children towards studies. Don’t let children to indulge in bad acts. Whatever you want to become in your life but education comes first and it is must for everybody. So first concentrate on your education and then decide what you have to do”, he said.
IGP said that the NIA team is in Kashmir to conduct initial inquiry and they will be provided assistance by police. “NIA team has arrived in Valley and the initial groundwork, which they have to do, they are doing that. If at any stage they need our assistance, then we will see what kind of assistance they want and we will cooperate with them accordingly”, he said.
He said that the purpose of his visit to Sopore in North Kashmir is to increase the interaction between common people and police. “The aim behind the visit is to increase the interaction of the police with the public, so that there are happy relations and the police is able to help the people in whatever way”, he said.
