Retd SI commits suicide, family blames admn for ‘demolition ops’

BISHNAH (JAMMU), July 22: Tense and under constant shock and trauma for the last several months allegedly due to demolition notices by the District Administration Jammu and physical action by demolishing a portion of his house two days ago under Jammu Ring Road Project, a retired Sub Inspector from SSB, Harbans Lal (56) of village Jeendarh in Bishnah committed suicide.
Reports said that house of Harbans Lal and his land had come under Ring Road Project. The Collector Land (SDM South) had been sending notices to the family for the vacation of the premises for which they claimed to have paid a portion of compensation as well. Two days ago, Tehsildar Bishnah SL Rana and SHO along with police force carried operation and demolished a portion of house including a wall. The family was not prepared to vacate the house as they claimed that Govt was offering just Rs 9 lakhs for the property worth Rs one crores.
Last evening when the wife of deceased Harbans Lal and his son Sahil had gone to the office of Tehsildar, Harbans Lal who was alone at home committed suicide by hanging. Hardly, an year ago his 22-year old son had also committed suicide under same circumstances.
After this incident, tension gripped the area. The family members and relatives besides villagers blamed District and Sub Divisional Administration for this extreme act by the Ex-serviceman turned farmer. His son Sahil alleged that his farther was under tension and depression due to notices and threats of the administration. They are paying just peanut amount as compensation. Many farmers of the area are facing same situation.
Tehsildar, Bishnah Sohan Lal Rana claimed that family has been sanctioned Rs 9 lakh compensation by the Collector and there was no tiff or exchange of hot words with the family during their visit at the site two days ago. He said only a wall was demolished and they tried to convince the family under cordial circumstances to vacate the area for making way for the completion of Ring Road project. Tehsildar said he was only working as per the directions from the top and did not threaten any one. Moreover, it was learnt that deceased was under depression and he had some land dispute with his brother as well, Tehsildar said.
The people also held brief protest at the village and demanded action against the officials concerned.
Congress Party sought justice for father, son who lost lives due to poor land, house compensation in Bishnah under Ring Road project. Expressing grief and anguish over the shocking incident of mysterious death of a person, Harbans Lal, at Jeendarh village of Bishnah, with in less than one year of the death of his son, for the reasons of great stress and frustration, due to the forcible demolition of his house and acquisition of land worth crore of rupees just for peanuts owing to the poor land compensation policy of the Govt to the farmers and other land owners affected due to Jammu Ring Road project, JKPCC has held the BJP Government responsible for this and demanded an independent probe into the circumstances of his and his son’s death besides adequate compensation to the deceased family.
In a statement JKPCC chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma said that family of deceased Harbans Lal was reportedly under great stress as the authorities had assessed the compensation of his house and landed property at a very low rate as compared to the prevalent market rate.
Later, PCC vice president Raman Bhalla along with senior leaders Ravinder Sharma, Shashi Sharma and Karan Bhagat also visited the house of the deceased and conveyed their condolences.
