The beautiful Ranbir Canal which is one of the pride water bodies of Jammu city is in a deplorable condition. Rather it is used as dustbin by people living along its banks. Every sort of refuse is dumped into it by people without bothering how much havoc it could play on it.
There were times when people would use its water for drinking purpose, and for recreational purposes during hot summers. No longer now. The water has got so much polluted that one develops skin diseases if he takes a plunge into it.
It is the duty of the Government and particularly of the people to protect it from pollution. In case that does not happen, it will have serious health and environment repurcussions. Before situation may worsen further, it is need of the hour that all necessary measures are taken to save this lifeline.
