KATHUA, Aug 5: Amidst reports of increasing illegal mining activities in Sewa river by the mafia, Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Bani, Joginder Singh Jasrotia seized a JCB and a Tipper from the river near Sewa Dam late last evening.
Official sources said that acting on the reports that illegal mining activities was thriving in the area with the alleged connivance of mafia men and local police, SDM Bani along with Tehsildar Shiv Kumar, Naib Tehsildar and some cops conducted raid during late evening and seized a JCB and a Tipper of a local contractor extracting sand illegally from the prohibited dam area near Bani.
Two operators of the vehicle and machine were also took into custody and handed over to police. A case under relevant sections was registered against the accused persons.
The SDM when contacted said that he was receiving several complaints of illegal mining in the area for the past several weeks and decided himself to keep check on such activities and seized a machine and tipper last evening. He said Tehsildar Bani has been directed to conduct such raids frequently.
