SRINAGAR, Aug 22: A top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commander was killed in an encounter in Kreeri area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district today and five associates of militants of Islamic State of J&K were arrested in Bandipora.
Security forces including police and 52 RR of Army launched an operation in Saloosa area of Kreeri in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district today. A top commander of LeT was killed in the encounter and he has been identified as Anees alias Chota Sultan from Pakistan. One AK-47 and 5 magazines were recovered from the site of the encounter.
Police said that Sultan was active since 2018 and was operating in Sopore, Zangeer and Bandipora areas and was involved in several militancy related incidents.
Police said that after closing the first operation, another cordon and search operation was launched after receiving specific information about presence of more militants in same area. The operation is going on. However, no contact was established with the hiding militants.
Police in Bandipora busted a militant module of Islamic State of J&K in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district by arresting five militant associates and recovering ammunition and flags from them.
Addressing a press conference at Bandipora, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bandipora Rahul Malik said that while conducting the investigation, it was found that these five militant associates were affiliated to militant outfit ISJK and had carried out a recce of Army camp to launch an attack.
“The five militant associates were waiting for the weapon consignment from Pakistan and in between, we received the specific information about that group following which the arrests were made,” the SSP said.
The group, according to the SSP Bandipora, was also “involved in making flags to recruit local boys and were sharing videos and photographs while propagating their ideology also.”
“The group was providing support, motivating and radicalizing the youths to join the ISJK militant outfit. They were making ISJK flags in Chittibandy-Aragam area of Bandipora and supplying the same to their associates in Srinagar,” the SSP said.
He said that arrests were made from various places of Bandipora district. “Arms, ammunition, matrix sheets and ISJK flags were recovered from possession of arrested persons of whom one belongs to Srinagar,” the SSP said, without revealing the identity of the arrested persons.
