PHE tank, another house collapse at Gandhtop

BASANTGARH, Sept 6: One more house and a large water tank of PHE Department were collapsed during last night at Gandhtop village of Basantgarh Sub Division in district Udhampur , where at least nine houses were collapsed last evening due to massive land slide.
Official sources said that water supply to the entire area has been snapped with the collapse of water tank and breakage of water pipes. One more Kucha house of a villager was collapsed in the land slide during night. The earth movement at the sliding area is very slow and about one kilometer area has been affected badly. A large orchard of Master Tirath Ram and his two houses were totally collapsed while large three- storey building of Principal, GHSS, Jagan Nath was also perished in land slide.
One of the affected villager said that though some Government officials and police reached the village last evening for rescue but from Government side only 50 blankets were provided this evening which are yet to be distributed among affected families. The people from about 20 nearby houses were shifted to the local community hall and Govt Middle School near Tag Temple at Gandh Top, he added.
SDM, Basantgarh, Vivek Modi when contacted said that he along with Tehsildar Yasir Arafat and SHO Basantgarh, Balwan Sharma and other officers was there at the village during the day today and closely monitoring the situation since yesterday. He said over eight houses including five Pucca were totally damaged and some partially as cracks have been developed in the walls of some houses and they have turned unsafe. The families from these unsafe houses have been shifted to the safer locations. Some people have moved to their relatives in the nearby villages, the SDM said.
Modi further disclosed that water supply to many areas has been snapped. Electric poles and a few transformers have also been hit and power supply affected. Ramnagar-Basantgarh Road is still blocked at this village as over 500 stretch is affected. The restoration work can be launched only when the slide movement stops. Two machines /JCB have been stationed at the village and the restoration work will be started soon, the SDM added.
When asked about any relief from Government side to the affected families, SDM said about utensils, ration, cash assistance etc , no family projected any demand as yet and if they needed, the Administration would provide the same.
