Madras HC issues notice to music maestro AR Rahman in IT case

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has issued  a notice to Oscar winning music composer AR Rahman in  connection with a Income-Tax evasion case.

On a plea filed by the IT department, a Division Bench of  Justices T S Sivagnanam and V Bhavani Subbaroyan has  issued notice to Rahman.

In the appeal, the IT department said Rahman had evaded  tax in individual capacity by allegedly transferring his  remuneration of Rs 3.47 crore to his charitable trust.

The IT department has found discrepancies in Rahman’s  tax filing for the year 2011-12.

The IT department moved the court stating that Rahman  had routed a remuneration of Rs 3.47 crore to AR Rahman  Foundation.

The huge sum was received as salary by the singer-composer for composing exclusive ringtones for the UK-based telecom  company Libra mobiles, in 2011 on a three-year contract. (AGENCIES)
