UDHAMPUR, Sept12: In a shocking incident, a young mother along with her newly born twins lost their lives after a road accident while being shifted to Chenani hospital because of non-availability of medical facility to the pregnant woman near her native village .
Besides the trio, another family member also died while four others were seriously injured in the accident when the private van, carrying them to hospital, rolled down in a deep gorge at Gharian Dhanas area in Chenani tehsil, this morning.
The incident has once again exposed extremely poor medical facilities in rural areas, where the Health Centres san doctors as well as para medical staff thus forcing the patients to rush to towns and cities during emergency hours, which sometimes causes tragic mishaps .
Reports said that deceased woman Shallo Devi (26), wife of Ajeet Kumar of Pattan Garh developed labour pain at home in the wee hours today and the family members immediately shifted her to the local PHC where no doctors was available.
As the PHC also had no ambulance facility, the family members hired a private Maruti van for shifting the pregnant woman who delivered a baby on way to the Chenani Sub-district Hospital. Before the van (JK02CL-1654) carrying woman and others could reach the Chenani hospital, it rolled down at Gharian Dhanas area while negotiating a sharp curve, resulting into serious injuries to woman, her newly born baby and five others in the vehicle.
Some locals rushed to the spot and shifted the injured persons to Chenani Sub-district Hospital where the woman delivered another baby and both of them died soon during treatment. In view of serious condition of the second baby and other injured persons of the accident, including husband of the deceased woman, doctors referred them to District Hospital Udhampur.
In the afternoon, the baby and one of the injured persons, identified as Krishana (52), son of Amro of Pattan Garh, also succumbed to their injuries. Hence, a mother along with her newly born twins among four persons had to lost their lives because of accident, which could have never occurred had the pregnant women was provided medical facility near the native village .
The injured persons, identified as Ajeet Kumar (30), son of Shatu of Pattan Garh (husband of deceased Shallo Devi), Santosh Kumar (20) son of Parkash of Pattan Garh, Reshma Devi (25) wife of Rakesh Kumar of Pattan and Mian Devi (43) wife of Baghu Pattan, are undergoing treatment at District Hospital Udhampur and their condition was stated to be stable.
