Srinagar, May 23: Army today said that around 400 to 500 militants are waiting on the other side of the Line of Control (LoC) on launching pads to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir while an infiltration bid was foiled in Keran sector in North Kashmir this morning.
The Commander of Srinagar based 15 Corps, Lt General Syed Atta Mohammad Hasnain, said here today that with the melting of snow on the mountains, there are apprehensions of fresh attempts of infiltration from across the LoC. “There would be increased attempts of infiltration during the coming month,” he added.
“There are some 400 to 500 militants waiting on launching pads to sneak into the State during the next two months, but we are prepared to foil all such attempts,” the Army Commander said.
The General said that these militants are waiting in Poonch and Keran sectors on the other side of the LoC. He said that they have acquired gadgets required for infiltration and guides and porters are also ready for them. He said that they are waiting for the melting of snow and June and July months are crucial as they will try to make attempts for infiltrating into Jammu and Kashmir.
He said this year large portions of the LoC fence was damaged due to heavy snowfall and Army has repaired 72-73 percent of the fence so far.
“We have so far repaired 72 to 73 per cent of the damaged LoC fence so far. Yesterday (Tuesday) there was an infiltration bid in Keran sector and we foiled that attempt although no militant was killed in the operation,” said the Army Commander.
On the recent grenade explosions in Sopore town and Batmaloo area of Srinagar city, the GOC said: “The militants want to register their presence by doing such acts. They want to pressurize the Government by such acts after the darbar move.”
In the meantime, army today foiled an infiltration bid from across the LoC in Keran sector of North Kashmir.
Army said that the infiltrators escaped to other side of the LoC after they were challenged by the alert troops.
The Army said that troops along the LoC noticed a group of militants sneaking into this side from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) under the cover of darkness in the early morning today in Keran sector.
When challenged, militants opened fire with automatic weapons, said Army. Troops also returned the fire but the militants managed to escape back into PoK. However, there was no loss of life or injury to troops, Army added.
After the reports of militants trying to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir, the troops along the LoC have intensified night patrolling to foil such infiltration attempts.
Meanwhile, Lt General Hasnain today inaugurated an LED board installed by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) to inform people about the latest status of traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. He said that more such boards will be installed for the converience of tourists and general public.
