Billawaria’s concern over encroachment of nallahs

JAMMU, Oct 16: Chairman Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Baldev Singh Billawaria along with Chairman Social Justice Committee, Jeet Kumar Angral today expressed concern over deteriorating condition of the drainage system in Jammu city.
At a press conference here, Billawaria raised the issue of encroachment of Nallahs. He said that the overall length of nallahs have been decreased to a great extent due to encroachment. He said that the big nallahs have now been converted into small nallahs and small one into drains due to encroachment. Every year JMC starts the desilting work of 104 big nallahs and 171 deep drains from the month of February but due to the encroachment and depletion of length of nallahs, water overflows during the rainy season at some places thereby causing havoc.
Billawaria urged the Lt. Governor that a policy regarding smart drainage systems be prepared keeping in view the expansion of Jammu city in coming 20 years so that better drainage facilities could be provided to the citizens of Jammu city. He said that drainage widening be done as per the pattern of road widening as it is also a necessary requirement keeping in view the near future.
Billawaria also said that those who have encroached nallahs shall not be spared. There shall be no discrimination in retrieving of the encroached nallah land and compensation shall also be provided to those whose owned land comes into the widening project. During the conference Chairman Jeet Kumar Angral also praised the issues raised by Baldev Singh Billawaria and extended his support on the issues.
