5 die; GMC Principal, MS among 385 test +ve

Srinagar, Oct 18: Kashmir today reported 385 fresh positive cases taking the tally of Coronavirus positives in Jammu and Kashmir to 87942 while five people died due to COVID-19 in the Valley, increasing the death toll in J&K to 1381.
Those who tested positive include Principal of GMC Srinagar, Dr Samia Rashid and Medical Superintendent of GMC Baramulla, Dr Syed Masood.
Dr Samia who tested positive yesterday is at the forefront of fighting COVID-19 as she had been visiting COVID wards in GMC Srinagar associated hospital personally to monitor the patient care. She is in home isolation but is monitoring developments in the hospital over phone.
Medical Superintendent GMC Baramulla hospital, Dr Syed Masood, has also been at the forefront of fighting COVID and running one of the busiest hospitals in Kashmir as it caters to whole of North Kashmir.
The hospital besides treating COVID patients has conducted 4200 non-COVID surgeries by following the Coronavirus protocol since March this year and its OPD is functioning normally.
Dr Masood has preferred to be in isolation at his official residence in Baramulla hospital than going home. He has mild symptoms and is monitoring functioning of hospital over phone.
Among today’s positives in Kashmir, Srinagar reported 167 cases, Budgam 33, Baramulla 52, Pulwama 16, Kupwara 32, Anantnag 49, Bandipora 15, Ganderbal 14, Kulgam 7 and Shopian 0.
Moreover, 598 more COVID-19 patients have recovered and were discharged from various hospitals including 310 from the Valley.
Among those who succumbed include four residents of Srinagar and one from Pulwama.
A 60-year-old man from Tral in district Pulwama died at SKIMS Soura, two days after he was admitted there.
A 70-year-old woman from Rawalpora died at SKIMS Soura, 11 days after she was admitted there.
A 75-year-old man from Lal Bazar in district Srinagar died five days after he was admitted to Chest Diseases hospital Srinagar.
With these deaths, the death toll has reached 924 in Kashmir.
Srinagar district with 332 deaths topped the list followed by Baramulla 135, Budgam 90, Pulwama 77, Kupwara 72, Anantnag 70, Kulgam 43, Bandipora 42, Shopian 33 and Ganderbal 30.
