MIER organizes symposium on gender equality

JAMMU, Dec 7: An online symposium was organized by Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies (SSGCWS) MIER College of Education on the theme “Is Gender Equality possible for Women in the present World Scenario”.
Six students from both UG and PG Department participated in the symposium and presented their views on the theme. On the basis of the results given by jury members, Palak Srivastava clinched the 1st prize, Anjeshri won the 2nd prize and Simran secured 3rd position. All the winners were from B Ed semester III. The event was adjudged by Manjari Seghal and Manju Vali members of Model Academy School.
Dr Suneeta Zalpuri, Professor & Head, Centre for Good Governance & Administrative Reforms, IMPARD, J&K was the chief guest. In her presidential address, said gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, thriving, and sustainable world and this could be attained through economic participation, change in attitude, equal health opportunities, political empowerment, educational equality and creating awareness regarding Government schemes both in urban and rural areas.
Prof Kaul deliberated on international milestones namely 1975-1985 as the decade for women, Millennium Development Goals, 2000 and Sustainable Development Goals, 2015 with regards to gender equality. She comprehensively deliberated on the measures of gender equality and provided day-to day examples and shared personal experiences.
Rupa Gupta, Director SSGCWS introduced the chief guest to the audience and said the theme of the symposium is pertinent. “Gender equality is when people of all genders have equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities. Everyone is affected by gender inequality- women, men, gender diverse people or children. It is a human right issue because no society can develop economically, politically, or socially when one section of its population is marginalized,” she explained.
Dr Rohnika Sharma, HoD UG Department, presented a formal vote of thanks. The programme was conducted by Komal Sharma and Navnidhika Sharma, members SSGCWS MIER.
Dr Renu Gupta, Vice-Chairperson MIER, Dr Adit Gupta, Director MIER also graced the occasion. Dr Mool Raj Sharma, HoD PG Department, along with the faculty members and students attended the symposium.
