Displaced voters still continue to face problems: Raina

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Dec 8: Kashmir Displaced District Unit of BJP J&K has deplored missing electoral rolls, alteration in names of constituencies to unfamiliar names and missing villages from where displaced people hailed prior to mass exodus said J&K BJP spokesperson and former MLC, Girdhari Lal Raina (Ajay Bharti).
Talking to reporters here, today he while expressing his satisfaction over the decision of the State Election Commission and MHA to dispense with the cumbersome process of M-Form/ DMPB forms and allow the community to vote in person, even though taken very late, said the step will help restore democratic right to the deprived community.
KDD leaders said M-Form/ DMPB forms were just one of the various difficulties and impediments that an elector from the community has to confront to exercise his or her right to choose a representative of their choice.  Enthusiasm to participate in the DDC election proved to be short-lived as the voter continues to face several problems in exercising her/his franchise.  These include in locating the name of a voter in Panchayat Electoral Rolls.
The another issue is the marked electoral rolls of polling booths that are sent to Polling Station at Jammu by respective Returning Officers. The rolls sent are selective and usually places are missing. Gushi, Gotingoo, Tikkar, Tahab, Panzpora, Hanzshot etc are places which were missing on 7th December and created a lot of difficulties forcing many voters to return without casting their vote, even though they had the EPIC card.
GL Raina was accompanied by Chandji Bhat president KDD, HK Razdan general secretary KDD and Rajiv Pandit spokesperson of the district.
He said in order to overcome these difficulties in future the authorities  must strengthen Jammu facilitation office designated for the help of displaced community,   ARO (migrants) must be authorised to, in consultation with the representatives of the community, to undertake requisite modifications/ addition and deletion of names of both the constituencies and individuals, electoral rolls must be made available in hard copy at different locations which  must be printed in English or Hindi- now official languages of the U T, number of eligible electors must be revealed constituency wise in advance and publicized to let the voters know whether their names are enrolled or not.
