JAMMU, Dec 10: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology (SKUAST)-Jammu scientists organized a Clinical-cum-Awareness camp for the benefit of the Bakarwal community under the aegis of a project sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India.
Vice Chancellor, SKUAST Jammu, Prof JP Sharma distributed various sanitation and hygiene kits and water filters to 80 women beneficiaries and education kits to 50 girls. He also supervised organization of a veterinary clinical camp and medical camp organized for the beneficiaries where free medicines were also distributed.
He suggested popularization of goat milk while promoting its traditional medicinal values to augment herders’ income and even its value addition to make popular milk products. He also advised on tapping international funding agencies and resources such as Corporate Social Responsibility funds to further the development projects for the needy community.
Dr Sanjeev Kumar, Director Sheep Husbandry, Jammu also mentioned the hardship of the Bakarwal community and their women in particular during their migration in search of fresh pastoral grounds and highlighted the various schemes and amenities provide by the Government.
A team of scientists also deliberated on zoonosis, animal health, hygiene, girl education and encouraged the participants in all aspects of personal sanitation and assisted by veterinary officials of the Sheep husbandry Department including, Dr Anil Kaul (DSHO-Jammu), Dr Pritam Manhas (APO), Dr Khalid Chaudhury, Dr Rizwana Zargar and Dr Mehroon Chowdhary.
Dr MS Bhadwal, Dean, Veterinary Faculty, Dr Jafrin Ara Ahmed, Principal Investigator of the project, Dr Nawab Nashiruddullah, Dr Nazam Khan, both Co-PI of the project, Dr Aditi Koul, Dr Kawardeep Kour, Dr Pranav Kumar, Dr Jonali Devi and Dr Mohammad Rashid also spoke on the occasion. Besides, the veterinary care team led by Dr Ankur Sharma and Dr Pankaj Gupta, there were also medicos Dr Ehtishamul Haq and Dr Sadaf Naaz to cater to the needs of the participants.
