SRINAGAR: Roads to dozens of far-flung and remote villages, including border towns of Keran and Karnah, reopened on Friday after remaining closed for three days due to slippery road conditions and accumulation of snow.
However, two main roads Kupwara-Machil and Gurez-Bandipora in north Kashmir remained closed due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions.
“Two-way traffic was on Friday restored on Kupwara-Keran road after improvement in weather and clearance of snow,” an official of Police Control Room (PCR), Kupwara, said over phone.
He said one-way traffic was on Friday allowed from border town of Karnah to Kupwara following clearance of road. “Only one-way traffic was allowed due to narrow passage at various places following accumulation of several feet of snow on roadsides,” he said, adding other border villages were also connected to the district headquarter after clearance of snow.
He said clearance operation to restore traffic on Kupwara-Machil road continued on war-footing to clear the snow, which has frozen due to sub-zero temperature. Border towns of Keran, Machil, Karnah and dozens of far flung and remote villages were cut off from the district headquarter on December 8 due moderate snowfall.
Meanwhile, border town of Gurez, which is surrounded from Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) from three sides, in north Kashmir district of Bandipora remained closed due to accumulation of snow at Razdan pass and adjoining areas on December 8.
“Traffic on Bandipora-Gurez road will be allowed only after getting a green signal from personnel deployed at various places on the road,” he said, adding the snow clearance operation is going on a war-footing. (agencies)
