JAMMU, May 25: The Dogri play ‘Bawa Jitmal’ directed by Ravinder Sharma is being organised at Jhiri Shrine for the locals and devotees of the Baba Jitmal, by Samooh theatre on May 27.
The play is based on the life of Bawa Jitmal alias Baba Jitto.
Jitmal (1426-74), a brahmin and devotee of Mata Vaishno Devi and Raja Mandlik used to live in Aghar Village near Katra. He left the village and met Mehta Bir Singh, the landlord of the Amb Gharota in Jammu and urged him to provide him a piece of land for tilling, who gave him a piece of barren land after signing an agreement, which said that the Jitmal had to give 1/4th of his produce to the Mehta.
With the dint of his hard work, Jitmal transformed the barren land into lush green fields and had a lusuriant yield. As soon as the Mehta got the news regarding the good yield, he becomes greedy and ordered his men to lift three fourth of the crop thereby breaking the agreement.
Bawa Jitmal pleaded for following the term of the agreement but all in vain. Feeling helpless Jitmal sat on the heap of grain and stabbed himself with dagger and sacrified his life in order to show his protest against the feudal system and autocracy.
The cast included Mridual Raj Anand, Suneedhi Sharma, Kanika Sharma, Vikram Khatri, Munish Malhotra, Kumar Binny, Pradeep Singh, Rohit Chib, Rahul Raina, Garima Sharma and Aranga Koul. The music is given by Surinder Manhas.
