KATRA, Jan 6: Dr Sushant Kumar, Consultant Cardiologist at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi (SMVD) Narayana Superspeciality Hospital successfully treated a 48-year-old patient suffering from chronic total occlusion, a complete blockage of one or more coronary artery that prevents the blood flow to the heart.
The patient had arrived to the hospital with complaints of breathlessness on exertion as well as on lying down posture and an angiography done at some other centre where he was advised to undergo angioplasty of completely occluded artery in some metro city.
Talking about the case, Dr Sushant Kumar, Cardiologist, SMVD Narayana Hospital, said, “This was a challenging case as patient had a completely occluded Left Circumflex artery which was the cause of the breathlessness with poor LV function. CHIP-CTO cases require specialised guide wires, guide catheters and micro catheter to cross the lesion as was in this case”.
He said usually such procedures are done by femoral route as it gives better support to the guide as well as ease of doing the procedures but in this case we did the angioplasty of completely occluded artery through the radial route using extension guide catheter successfully. “The preference of radial route over femoral was because it is safest with less risk of bleeding and hematoma formation. This is one of the first instances of such procedures in the entire Jammu region,” he added.
CTO cases require longer time to perform and patience by both cardiologist as well as patient. The procedure took 2 hours for completion and the patient was discharged next day of the procedure. On follow up, patient is asymptomatic and is doing well.
“The success of this procedure is not only a milestone for us, it is an achievement for the region as going forward the people in the region will not have to travel to metro cities to avail such latest treatment modalities” added, M M Mathavan, Facility Director at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super Specialty Hospital.
