RAJOURI, May 16: After his failure to shoot self with Sentry’s gun, a Head Constable of J&K Police committed suicide by jumping from a bridge in Kotranka area of district Rajouri last night.
The deceased has been identified as Ghulam Rasool (47), son of Hasan Din, resident of Raj Nagar in Budhal ( Kotranka). He had been posted at Larkoti post and returned two-three days back after the post was withdrawn. He was now at Kotranka Police Station. Rasool had deposited the entire belongings of the post at DPL Rajouri hardly yesterday.
A senior police official said that during last night, at around 12.30 pm Ghulam Rasool came out of a room in the police Station and moved to the Sentry on duty Abdul Sattar to fetch water for him. Sentry went along with his service rifle and offered water to his senior. He drank water and then tried to snatch Sentry’s rifle. The Sentry suspecting some thing wrong grappled with the Head Constable and also raised alarm. In the process two round were also fired and one of them hit the ceiling of the room and another on the wall. Then other cops also woke up and ran.
Ghulam Rasool then left the Police Station and moved away in darkness. The other cops also followed him and started chasing. Head Constable then moved towards main Kotranka bridge and then jumped into the river and died on the spot. The SHO Haji Bashir also reached there after some time. They informed the SDPO and SP Rajouri.
The body of the Head Constable was shifted to Rajouri hospital for postmortem this morning and then handed over to the family. The police registered a case and started investigation into the matter.
A senior police official said that Gh Rasool was upset for the last over couple of weeks. He had not even gone to his home since long. He used to keep silent most of the time and spend time in isolation. The SP is said to have initiated an inquiry at his own level.
