JAMMU, May 17: 45th World Telecommunication Day (WTD) as proclaimed by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2005 was celebrated by The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) Jammu Centre at Government Boys Polytechnic, here today.
The main objective of WTD is to raise global awareness of societal changes brought about by the Internet and new technologies. The purpose of WTD is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other Communication Technologies can bring to societies and economies as well as ways to bridge the digital divide.
Joy Ganjoo, Chairman, Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, Jammu Centre, while speaking on the theme said that the advancements in telecommunication and Information Technology will result in the better road safety standards and connectivity in our country.
Dr Pawanesh Abrol, Secretary, welcomed the fellows, members and participants and read the message of Ban ki-Moon, Secretary General, United Nations Organization.
Rajesh Bakshi, Chief Prosecuting Officer, Crime, J&K Police, was the invited speaker on the occasion. He dwelt at length on how the Internet and Communication Technologies can improve the road safety mechanism in our State.
Neetu Maini, Principal, Govt Boys Polytechnic, Jammu was the chief guest on the occasion. In her speech to the students, she emphasized the urgent need to adopt the road safety mechanisms.
Vijay Sharma, Treasurer, informed the participants how television and radio help improve the road safety. He also gave a vote of thanks to the dignitaries and participants.
Samir Sharma, Prof M R Verma and Dr Shubhnandan S Jamwal were among the fellows and members of IETE who attended the function along with Kudeep S Bhatia, Rajesh Gupta and various faculty and heads of the departments along with students of the Polytechnic.
