Mercury plummets in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 28 : The cold wave conditions intensified today with Srinagar recording a low of minus 5.6 degrees Celsius with Ski resort of Gulmarg freezing at minus 13.5 degrees Celsius.
A Meteorological Department official said that Srinagar recorded a minimum of minus 5.6 degrees Celsius against minus 2.0 degrees Celsius the previous night.
The mercury settled at minus 12.3 degrees Celsius in Pahalgam against minus 7.7 degrees Celsius the previous night.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 10.5 degrees Celsius against 4.4 degrees Celsius the previous night while Kokernag recorded a minimum of minus 10.7 degrees Celsius against 8.3 degrees Celsius the last night.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 13.4 degrees Celsius against 12.0 degrees Celsius previous night.
The mercury settled at minus 2.2 degrees Celsius in the in Kupwara against minus 2.0 degrees Celsius the previous night.
And Dal lake and other water bodies continued to be frozen.  The boatmen faced difficulty in rowing their boats in the frozen lake. They had to cut the ice to make way for their boats. The other water bodies including ponds were also frozen across Kashmir.
The water taps continue to be frozen leading to water shortage across Kashmir. In the morning and evening, the roads had become a sheet of ice causing slippery conditions.
The weatherman has forecast mainly dry weather with morning mist for the next 24 hours. Scattered rains and snow has been forecast from January 31 onwards.
