Help to earthquake victims not sufficient: Mankotia

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, May 19: National Panthers Party president and MLA Udhampur, Balwant Singh Mankotia, has alleged that Union Government announced 10,000 tents for Doda, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah earthquake victims but only 3400 tents have been provided to the administration for disbursement and the assistant being provided to them is not adequate.
Mr Mankotia who had extensive visit along with 21-member team to the quake affected areas told the media-persons here today that strong resentment was brewing among the people of the area. He said as per SDM Bhaderwah hardly 350 tents have been provided to him for disbursement while 700 to the Kishtwar District Administration. Over all hardly 3400 tents have been provided in Doda and Kishtwar districts. It has been decided to provide 4-5 tents per Panchayat and same number for one ward.
The NPP leader said that 100 per cent houses have been damaged and most of the people are spending nights in the open due to fear. Providing just 4-5 tents in each Panchayat will be a cruel joke with the people. He said till now only visits of the VIPs are going on and no actual relief work has started so far. People need immediate relief and assistance and till now no assessment job has been done by the Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation staff. Moreover, Disaster Management Authority was no where in sight and same feed back has been received from the public.
Mr Mankotia alleged that only hollow claims of the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad have been observed and there was total chaos in the area. He demanded that immediate relief be provided to these victims and it should be discovered that out of the 10,000 tents why only 3400 have been provided and what is the fate of the remaining tents as announced by Ghulam Nabi Azad. The MLA said that there was need to restore confidence among the people and provide alternate accommodation as it was not safe to stay in the damaged houses. Sayed Rafiq Shah-MLC and Ex-MLA Faqir Nath also accompanied Mr Mankotia.
