JAMMU, May 19: Natrang staged a new Hindi play “Gareeb Log” in its Sunday Theatre Series at Natrang studio.
The play was based on a story of Jagroop Singh Roop and was directed by Neeraj Kant.
The play very dramatically portrays the conditions of the poor and underprivileged people in society.
The play opens in a small village where most of the people are illiterate and they earn their livelihood by doing hard labour, yet they suffer many hardships and problems and live hand to mouth. A village school master is the only educated and awared person there, who has a strong concern about the condition of the people. He revolutionises the youth so that they may fight for their own rights and not get deceived by the greed of the capitalists.
A poor villager ‘Nathu’ had once taken a small debt from ‘Shah’ when his father was ill and had been giving back the installments at regular intervals. But the greedy ‘Shah’ had manipulated the accounts and claims a large amount from ‘Nathu’ to settle the accounts else forces him to give him his buffalo, his only source of income. This news has brought gloom in Nathu’s family. He went to Master for help, he calculated the accounts logically and made him understand that he has to pay back a very small amount as he has returned back most of his debt. On this, ‘Shah’ has to leave his greed and had to logically understand what Master told.
The artists who performaned in the play included Uplaksh Singh Kotwal as ‘Master’, Sachin Saini as ‘Shah’, Ashwani Bali as ‘Nathu’, Sajra Qadir as ‘Wife’ and Sushil Raina as ‘Aala Singh’. The lights were executed by Ankush Lakhnotra, music was rendered by Mohd Yaseen, while Sumeet Sharma coordinated the show.
