Srinagar, Feb 8: The minimum temperatures remained below sub-zero across Kashmir today even as the mercury rose across the Valley.
A Meteorological Department official said that the mercury increased by a notch in Srinagar, settling at minus 2.0 degree Celsius against the previous night’s 3.6 degree Celsius.
Srinagar has minus 0.4 degree Celsius normal for this time of the year and for the last three days barring previous, the minimum temperature stayed above sub-zero level.
The mercury has consistently remained far below normal this winter. On January 31, the mercury plunged to minus 8.8 degree Celsius, the coldest January night recorded in Srinagar after 30 years.
The minimum temperature also rose in other parts of the Valley.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 5.5 degree Celsius against minus 6.3 degree Celsius the previous night while the mercury settled at minus 6.2 degree Celsius in Pahalgam same as on the previous night. Kokernag recorded a low of minus 2.0 degree Celsius against minus 5.4 degree Celsius the previous night.
The mercury also settled at minus 2.0 degree Celsius in Kupwara against minus 3.7 degree Celsius the previous night while Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 2.5 degree Celsius against minus 11.0 degree Celsius the previous night.
The weatherman has forecast mainly dry weather over the plains of J&K in the next few days. “Very light rain/snow at one or two places on higher reaches of J&K, mainly dry weather on the plains of J&K,” the weatherman said.
