NYC Volunteers’ indefinite hunger strike from today

SRINAGAR, May 27: As part of their State wide agitation programme the National Youth Corps (NYC) volunteers would start the indefinite hunger strike here from tomorrow.
A delegation of NYC volunteers working as support staff in different Government departments while talking to Excelsior said that the hunger strike is being carried out to remind the State Government of its repeated assurance that the problems of NYC volunteers would be solved.
“We are not demanding moon or stars from the Government. We want them to extend our contracts that are expiring soon. We are not demanding any permanent job. Our demand is extension of contracts. Till now we have received mere promises and no action has followed these promises,” said the NYC volunteers.
Scores of NYC volunteers are likely to join the hunger strike programme scheduled to be carried out at the youth hostel in the morning on May 28. Some of the volunteers may carry out a sit in at the press enclave and raise strong protest in support of their demands.
Meanwhile, the NYCs of Budgam district have taken a strong exception to the enforced registration of 64 volunteers under the Udaan scheme launched by the Central Government for skilled un-employed youth of the State. They termed the action unwarranted and asked the volunteers to de-register with the Udaan scheme.
