JAMMU, Feb 17: The residents of Kali Janni, Parade, Purani Mandi, Fattu Chougan and other areas of Old City have shown their grave concern over the slapping of challan on parked vehicles on the road side parking at Parade by Traffic Police for last some days.
A delegation of the people from the area who visited this office said that they face lot of humiliation and harassment with this step of the Traffic Police as they have been parking their vehicles in this area for decades together due to non availability of parking space at their residences owing to congestion in the city.
One of the aggrieved persons said that he is parking his car at parking slot daily for years together. He said he has to take his father twice in a week for dialysis and it is very difficult for him to park the vehicle over a one km long distance at Bus Stand. Same problem was narrated by other people in the area. They said it is very difficult for them to rush a patient to hospital in the event of any emergency as they have to travel about one km first to get their vehicle from parking slot and then take the patient to hospital. They said the Government should either make alternative arrangement of the parking in the area or allow the people to park the vehicles as before.
However, when contacted SSP Traffic, Jammu , Shiv Kumar Sharma said that the Traffic Police has launched a campaign against the wrong parking in the city and any vehicle found parked on road side will be challaned Rs 5000 and even a FIR can be registered against him for causing obstruction on the road.
He said their campaign is not linked to parking but the Traffic Police few days back received a campaign that people did not get the space to take the dead body to cremation ground from interior of the city and they faced a lot of problem. So to avoid such problems in future the traffic police decided to take action against the wrong parking in the city.
However, people said that no such action is being taken in other areas for wrong parking except in the vicinity of Parade.
