2429 ASHAs appear in NIOS certification exam

Jammu, Feb 25: As many as 2429 ASHAs (Accredited Social Health Activists) of NHM, J&K appeared today in National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) Theory Examination for certification by National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), which was conducted at all India level today.
The Theory Examination was conducted by NIOS in all the districts of J&K following the COVID-19 protocol in the designated Centres.
In Jammu District, 129 ASHAs appeared out of 130 trained; 119 appeared out of 119 trained in Doda; 123 appeared out of 125 trained in Kathua; 116 appeared out of 117 trained in Kishtwar; 126 appeared out of 131 trained in Poonch; 178 appeared out of 179 trained in Rajouri; 116 appeared out of 120 trained in Ramban; 143 appeared out of 148 trained in Reasi; 129 appeared out of 132 trained in Samba; 123 appeared out of 132 trained in Udhampur; 125 appeared out of 125 trained in Anantnag; 141 appeared out of 141 trained in Bandipora; 152 appeared out of 166 trained in Baramulla; 129 appeared out of 130 trained in Budgam; 7 appeared from Ganderbal; 120 appeared out of 121 trained in Kulgam; 121 appeared out of 125 trained in Kupwara; 180 appeared out of 180 trained in Pulwama; 97 appeared out of 104 trained in Shopian and 55 appeared in district Srinagar.
Despite COVID-19 pandemic, J&K is at the topmost position among States/ UTs where 20% of ASHAs appeared in the All India level NIOS examination today. Till date, 24.69% ASHAs of J&K have been certified by NIOS. The NIOS certification in J&K UT is likely to touch 41% which is proportionately the highest in the country.
ASHAs being engaged by NHM, J&K are working as a bridge between Health Department and the community. All the health schemes of NHM/ J&K Govt. are being implemented by ASHAs at the grass root level. ASHA is a link through which the health care needs of the people are being catered. Viewing their importance for Health care delivery at ground level, NHM has started the project of certification of all ASHAs.
At present, about 13000 ASHAs have been engaged in the UT of J&K and all of them will be certified in phased manner by NIOS in a period of two years. The department is targeting that 3000 ASHAs would appear in the All India Level ASHA Certification Examination in every six monthly session by National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) to create a pool of health activists in J&K. The focus is that after 2022, no ASHA is left uncertified in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. This flagship project is very closely monitored and reviewed strictly and periodically by Sh. Atal Duloo, Financial Commissioner, Health & Medical Education, J&K and Choudhary Mohammed Yasin, Mission Director, NHM, J&K and has a direct and active support of Chairperson, NIOS, Prof. Saroj Sharma and National Project Director, NIOS, Alok Mishra.
