JAMMU, May 26: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today expressed hope that the Centre will surely raise and discuss the issue of naxalism in the security meet scheduled to be held on June 5 at the national capital.
“The Centre as well as the states where naxalism have dominance, must take strict measures to control it,” Mr Abdullah told reporters after inaugurating fourth bridge on River Tawi here.
The Chief Minister, while condemning the attack on Congress rally yesterday in Raipur, Chattisgarh said “it is a matter of concern and I hope that the Centre government will take up and discuss the issue in the all states national security meet to be held in New Delhi on June 5.”
Asserting that such attacks even did not happen in militancy-hit state of Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Abdullah said, “I think Maoists have now started striking at soft targets as it becomes easy for them to attack political rallies and gatherings.”
As elections are scheduled to be held in Chattisgarh, it could be the reason behind attack, he apprehended and added, “in Kashmir too, militants earlier attacked the security personnel and then targeted the politicians.”
Terming it as security lapse, Mr Abdullah said, “if the former Chief Minister and other senior leaders were attending the rally, tight security arrangements should have been made at the venue”.
Around 28 people, including three senior Congress leaders were killed in yesterday’s naxalite attack in Raipur. (AGENCIES)
