JAMMU, Mar 10: Following clash between a group of protesting students and some employees of the Jammu University over closure of the campus gate, this morning, the JU administration ordered that resorting to undemocratic mode of protests like closing the gates shall be treated as unlawful and liable for strict disciplinary action.
“Resorting to undemocratic mode of protests like closing of the campus gates by any one as matter of protest and misbehaving with the University employees/security personnel while discharging their duties, shall be treated purely as an unlawful activity and anybody, if found involved in any such unlawful undemocratic activity, shall be liable for strict disciplinary action as warranted under rules,” reads an order, issued today by the JU Registrar.
Earlier, a clash took place between a group of protesting students and some employees after the former forcibly closed the university gate and did not allow anyone to enter the campus, this morning.
These students were demanding waiving of fee for the period when the university was closed due to COVID-19 lockdown. The protesters forcibly closed the university gate and did not allow anyone to enter the campus.
Despite repeated pleas by the university employees to open the gate, the students did not respond following which a scuffle took place between them. A students allegedly slapped security guard who tried to open the gate on request of general secretary of the Non-Teaching Employees Union.
Even as the situation was later diffused on the intervention of the university authorities, a serious note was taken over the practice of closing campus gate during protests.
