SRINAGAR, Mar 26: Chairperson of Municipal Committee (MC) Qazigund in South Kashmir was today caught on camera taking bribe from a local contractor here.
As per details, the Chairperson who has been identified as Shameema had demanded a bribe of Rs 1.1 lakh from a local contractor named Nawaz Ahmad Khan by warning him that she could easily cancel his tender.
The contractor told Excelsior that she (the Chairperson) asked him to pay her the amount after he was given the tender of certain works in the area.
He said that she has been pestering him on and off over the last several months and that he was compelled to pay her for clearing various works even though he always followed the rules.
The contractor finally decided to record the entire episode when he met the Chairperson for handing over Rs 10,000 to her.
“I was fed up with this and I set up the camera to record the entire episode; I have been paying her earlier as well and it was getting really difficult for me,” the contractor said.
In the recorded video, the chairperson can be heard demanding more money from the contractors and slips Rs 10,000 into the pocket.
Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag Dr Piyush Singla told Excelsior that he has taken a note of the video. “I will initiate an inquiry into the matter immediately and the action will be taken accordingly,” he said.
