Pummy Sharma is new talent in Indianized- English novel writing. This budding novelist is first a student of final year in G.D.C Hirangar. Although he has a tender mind yet he is capable of astounding his readers by his debut novel. “The Journey We Left”, the journey which has been described presenting a true picture of the journey of life. That begins with the hope of accomplishment but these hopes dashes to the ground when a man fails to see eye to eye with the awkward circumstances of life. It also shows that life is not always a bed of roses, sometimes it comes up with some unexpected and powerful blows.
The story of the novel is set in a small village of Kathua District from where the main protagonist, Nitish hailed. The leading hero is a representative of every Indian youth who wishes to be successful and has dreams of fantastic career in any noble profession in latter life.
Digression from the main motif of the story, the story gives minute focus on teenager’s dreams, whims and the promises which has to be fulfilled but they back out from them at first instance. The author penned down these things and gave free hands to expose the weakness of present day students who see dreams but at the same time they don’t work hard to materialize them in worldly life.
The story also gives a fleet glimpse of love-hate relationship of parents and children. The minor tussle with the parents of Nitish threw light on deteriorating relationship between parents and children and above all the relationship that has been considered pious since centuries is now on the road of alteration. Actually younger generation feels that in the crust of family folds their freedom is being constrained. Nitish feels in the same way. He believes that curtailment in freedom is main obstacle in his life. So for the sake of his love, he left his family and settled himself down with his lady love in Shimla. Vaishali is his true love. She provided him solace in lonesome life. She not only turned into his faithful wife but she brought him good luck too. Their life had been running very smoothly for two years till the deplorable fate struck a blow on Nitish. His wife Vaishali and baby daughter died in an accident. All happiness for Nitish became a bane. With tragic accident Nitish’s sojourn in Shimla comes to an end. He went Kerala in hope of meeting his long lost beloved, Saumya, to whom he met in a train journey and both proposed each other for marriage.
After reaching Kerala he found no peace. He took no breath till he found the address of Saumya. Finally his fate again threw tantrums on him by snatching Saumya from his hands. Saumya, who was the only loving spirit for him, had been dead for ages. She left behind her, her family, especially a younger sister and mother in the lurch. He confessed his negliance towards Saumya before her mother and sister. Ultimately he decided to settle there and expressed desire to become one of them.
There are some typing errors at some places, which is not a big flaw. I think they will be fine with next edition of the book. It is an interesting story with inspiring theme. The story starts with childish frolics and finishes with a grave message for parents and society. The parents should adopt new values and give freedom to their wards so that their children can save themselves from plunging into muddles.
