JAMMU, Mar 29: Counting for elections to Amar Singh Club was stopped midway last night and ballot boxes were sealed by the Election Committee after they detected serious discrepancies. The Committee, which was conducting elections on directions of the Court, will now submit their report to the judiciary in next couple of days.
Vinod Sharma, Returning Officer for the elections, told the Excelsior that some of the contesting candidates pointed out certain discrepancies in the counting which was going on last night after the voting was conducted during the day yesterday.
Four members of the Election Committee including Vinod Sharma, KK Khosa, Shehnaz Goni and Vijay Saraf checked the ballots themselves on the complaints of contesting members.
Sharma said they found serious discrepancies in the counting.
In the meantime, virtual chaos erupted at the counting centre with some of the candidates in whose favour the results were going supporting continuation of counting while majority of the candidates and members suggesting immediate suspension of the election process.
“Some contesting members came up with unique idea of sharing their votes with other candidates which was totally unacceptable,” Sharma said, adding as confusion aggravated, the Election committee was left with no option but to immediately stop the counting.
After suspension of the counting, the ballot boxes were sealed in presence of contesting candidates and their signatures were also taken, Sharma said.
He added that since the Election Committee had been set up by the Court for conduct of elections, it will submit its report to the Court in next couple of days.
