Huge cache of arms, ammunition recovered from Karnah

Jammu. Mar 29: A Municipal Councillor and a cop were martyred in a militant attack in Sopore area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district today while as another Councillor was critically injured.
Militants this afternoon fired indiscriminately upon the Municipal Councillors of Sopore Municipal Committee near Lone Building opposite SDH Sopore resulting in injuries to two Municipal Councillors Reyaz Ahmad Pir and Shams-ud-Din Pir and a police personnel Shafqat Nazir.

Among the injured Councilor Reyaz Ahmad and police personnel Shafqat Ahmad succumbed to their injuries. Another injured councillor has been shifted to hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said the preliminary investigation indicates that a local militant Mudasir Pandit of LeT along with a foreign militant are involved in the attack.
He said that investigations are rigorously going on. He also took serious note of the poor and inappropriate retaliation by the PSOs of protected persons present on spot and directed SSP Sopore to put four PSOs under suspension.
Police have registered a case in this regard under relevant Sections of law and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this crime.
The IGP Kashmir visited Sopore and inspected the crime scene and held a meeting with Army’s Sector Commander, DIG CRPF and SSP Sopore.
The main focus of meeting was today’s attack by the militants in Sopore town and the necessary security measures to be taken to counter such attacks.
While interacting with the officers, the IGP Kashmir urged upon the participating officers that it is of crucial importance to enhance security of vulnerable persons and to take all necessary measures to thwart away nefarious designs of militants.
And a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) man who was injured during an attack in Lawaypora, succumbed to his injuries today at SK Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), taking the toll of slain CRPF men to three.
He has been identified as Jagernath Roy and had suffered head injury in the attack.
In the meantime, security forces recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunition at Dhanni village near the Line of Control (LoC) in Karnah sector in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district today.
The arms and ammunition was recovered during the joint operation launched by the Army and Police in Dhanni village close to the LoC last evening. The recoveries include 5-AK 47 rifles, 6 magazines and 7 pistols with 9 magazines besides ammunition.
A Defence spokesman said here that the Dhanni village is in the close proximity to the LoC facing Lipa Valley which is under the observation of Pakistan army posts.
“Some suspects have also been taken into custody to ascertain the facts and to conclude the investigation on merits”, the spokesman said.
He maintained that the timely recovery of huge cache of arms and ammunition has thwarted any possible untoward incident in otherwise peaceful region and has scuttled the nefarious plans of terrorist outfits to try derailing peace and harmony.
