AKHNOOR, Apr 15: Memorial of famous Dogri poet, Padamdev Singh “Nirdosh” in Akhnoor town is losing its importance and glory, as the local authorities at the Sub Divisional level, have failed to initiate urgent maintenance work on it.
Padam Dev Singh “Nirdosh” was born on the Baisakhi day in 1940 in Kaleeth Fort, in the royal family of Kaleeth in Tehsil Akhnoor and breathed his last in 1994 in Akhnoor town. He was a great poet and also recognised in the field of literature by the Government.
The Fabara Chowk in Akhnoor was renamed as Nirdosh Chowk in 1997 and later on a statue was erected by J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages at the site. When Sham Lal Sharma, the then MLA from Akhnoor was Minister, the memorial was given face-lift and beautification.
But unfortunately, due to neglect by the present local administration, the memorial and area around it, has turned into bad condition. The lights are broken, the tiles and staircase are also damaged. The place has become a dharna point by different groups who leave all sort of protest material like flags, banners, posters etc. on the memorial site hiding the memorial from clear view.
Even on the birthday of Nirdosh on Baisakhi day, many important persons of the area, officers in the Administration and public paid floral tributes to mark the day, but unfortunately, the local administrations did not pay any heed to initiate repair/ maintenance work at the `Smark of noted poet in the heart of Akhnoor town.
