JAMMU, Apr 20: A delegation of Gandhi Nagar People’s Front (GNPF) led by Advocate Deepak Gupta met XEN I&FC and highlighted the problems being faced by the people due to the worst conditions of canals in Jammu city.
The delegation members said, the canals are filled with garbage and silt but no one from the administration is taking cognizance of the matter.
They also submitted a memorandum to the XEN in this regard and claimed that authorities concerned only lift six inch garbage every year but no permanent solution to the problem of silt and plastic waste in the canals is reached at.
Gupta said that these canals must be beautified and paths should be developed along their sides along with erection of iron mesh to prevent people from throwing garbage into these canals.
He also said that the concerned department must organize awareness programmes with the assistance of NGOs to stop people from polluting canals.
Vidash Dalmotra said that clearance of silt must be the priority for the department as there is a risk of spread of several water borne diseases in the areas adjoining these canals.
He further said that after the clearance of silt, the waste is kept on roadsides which converts into dust and causes miseries for the people.
The delegation members said the issue has been discussed several times before the administration but no action in this regard has been initiated by the government.
They doubted malpractice in allotment of silt clearance work this year and demanded a probe into it.
