Taj for restoring prime position of GMC in medical education

SRINAGAR, June 7: Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services and Sports, Taj Mohi-ud-Din inaugurated the 3rd annual conference of J&K chapter of Association of Surgeons of India – JAKASICON 2013 here today.
In his inaugural address, the Minister hoped that the deliberations at the conference would go a long way in improving the patient care in the state. He said many advancements are taking place in the field of medical sciences and there is a need to share them among the medical practitioners for an efficient and better patient care.
Describing Govt. Medical College as a premier institution of the State, Taj said not long ago it was rated as one of the best medical colleges of the country and at one point it was even ranked as no 4. He appealed the faculty, staff and students of the college to help in restoring the college its glory and prime position.
The Minister said Government would do whatever is required in this regard and sought support and help from the faculty of the college. He said not the state but even the whole country is proud of the efficient doctors the state has produced who have proved their mettle at international level. But he said, what is required now is conviction and dedication coupled with sincere efforts to take the college back to its position which we all are proud of.
Addressing the session, Minister of State for Medical Education, Feroz Ahmed Khan hoped the conference would be a good learning experience for the young surgeons of the state. He said such conferences bridge the gap between research and its application.
Earlier in his welcome address, Principal GMC, Dr Rafiq Pampori dwelt in detail the role played by GMC Srinagar in spreading medical education in the state ever since its establishment in 1959. He said JAKASICON 2013 is one of the events by which the college is trying to keep its staff and students abreast with latest research in medical sciences world over.
Head, Department of Surgery GMC, Prof Showket Jeelani, former president ASI,  Prof Ramakant and President, JAKASICON, Prof Rakesh Saraf also spoke on the occasion.
The event was organized by Government Medical College Srinagar in which many prominent doctors and medical practitioners from within the state and outside participated. Many famed Kashmiri doctors and former faculty members of the GMC including Dr Girja Dhar, Dr Wazeera Khanam, Dr Syed Zahoor, Prof Abdul Rasheed Khan  were also present in the inaugural session. The three day conference would deliberate upon the latest changes and innovations that have taken place in the field of surgery.
On the occasion, Mr. Taj released a souvenir of the conference.
