With alarming rise in COVID cases, number of beds available in hospitals decrease

68 more beds added in GMC

JAMMU, May 5: With alarming surge in COVID cases in the UT for last three days the number of beds meant for such patients in the Hospitals across the J&K has have declared.

As per reports, out of 1700 beds which were available in SKIMS Srinagar, different medical colleges of the UT as well as private hospitals, district and sub district hospitals on May 2 has now declined to 177 by this evening due to the alarming surge in the number of COVID patients.
The official data revealed that out of 177 beds, 97 are vacant in the Medical Colleges and other hospitals of Jammu region while 80 are available in different Medical Colleges as well as other hospitals of Kashmir valley.
However to cope up with the situation the authorities said that 68 more beds are being added in GMC Jammu from tomorrow taking the total strength of beds in the Hospital to 473. At present the strength of COVID beds in the Hospital is 405. Among them all except one are occupied by the patients.
The authorities said that all possible steps are being taken to meet the situation arising out of increasing number of COVID patients in the UT whose number surged to 9966 in last two days. To deal with heavy rush of patients after the beds in various hospitals under its control have been fully occupied by the patients, the Directorate of Health Services Jammu has kept 40 new beds in Rajiv Gandhi Hospital Gangyal and 60 beds in Sub District Hospital Kot Bhalwal respectively for mild COVID patients who will be shifted there from tomorrow. In these two hospitals the facilities of Oxygen contractors will also be provided for such patients, official sources said.
The Old and New Block Hospitals of Gandhi Nagar have the total capacity of 248 beds out of which the New Block which is under the control of Medical College Jammu has strength of 172 beds, while the Old Block which is under the administrative control of Directorate of Health Services has a capacity of 76 beds. But at present 28 beds are vacant in the two blocks of the Hospital.
In the ASCOMS Hospital Jammu out of 110 beds only one is lying vacant now while all the 70 beds which were lying vacant in Psychiatry Hospital Jammu on May 2 have been occupied by the COVID patients during last three days and presently no bed is available in the Hospital. Likewise out of 110 beds in Chest Disease Hospital Jammu only two beds are available at present, the official data reveled.
In Government Medical College Doda only one bed out of 50 beds meant for COVID patients is available at present while nine beds are available out of 90 in GMC Rajouri. Even the beds have fallen short in the sub district and district hospitals also due to alarming rise in COVID cases during last two days. No bed is available in Narayana Hospital Katra where all 111 beds are occupied by COVID patients. Two beds out of 40 are now available in District Hospital Poonch while all the 30 beds have been occupied in CHC Mendhar. Twelve beds out of 90 are available in district Hospital Kishtwar while no bed is available in CHC Surankote and Mendhar where the total capacity of beds is 30 each.
Only 8 beds are available in DH Udhampur which has a total capacity of 56 beds and no bed is available in CHC Chenani out of 50 beds. All of 40 beds are occupied in DH Samba while two beds are lying vacant in CHC Ramgarh in Samba district out of 33. All the 15 beds in DH Ramban and 16 beds of AH Ghagwal in Samba district are occupied.
In Medical College, Kathua out of 46 beds only one is vacant at present while all 25 beds are occupied in CHC Basohli.
All but one bed out of 203 is lying vacant in GMC Srinagar while in SKIMS Srinagar out of 300 beds six are vacant at present. Same is case with Chest Disease Hospital, Srinagar where out of 94 beds only one is available while all 174 beds are occupied in SKIMS Bemina, Srinagar.
In JLNM Hospital, Srinagar out of 150 beds nine are available while in Kashmir Nursing Home, Srinagar no bed out of 50 is available as all are occupied by the COVID patients. Same is case with GMC Baramulla where out of 120 beds meant for COVID patients no bed is spare at present while in SDH Sopore, in Baramulla district out of 50 beds only four are available.
In GMC Anantnag, all the 70 beds are occupied while out of 110 beds in Trauma Hospital Bijbehara, Anantnag only seven are available. All the 50 beds of NTPHC Akoora Anantnag are occupied while six beds out of 31 are available in DH Bandipora and no bed out of 100 is available in NHPC Bandipora.
Similarly, no beds are available out 40 each in CHC Dawar and NTPHC Budgam. Out of 60 beds in DH Kulgam 10 are available while four beds are available in DH Shopian out of 100 and eight are available in DH Pulwama out of 120 beds.
In CHC Kupwara out of 100 beds only eight are available while 12 beds are available out of 50 in DH Ganderbal.
However, authorities in Srinagar said that Government is taking all measures to increase the capacity of beds in hospitals further. Though the number of patients is increasing day by day but at the same time those who get well are also discharged with the result the beds occupied by them are given to newly admitted patients, they added.
Moreover, two more 500 bedded Hospitals each are being established by DRDO both in Srinagar and Jammu regions soon which will also help to a great extent to cope up with the treatment of increasing number of COVID patients in the hospitals of UT, authorities revealed.
