Police registers timber smuggling case against Army

SRINAGAR, June 12: Police today registered a case against Territorial Army for smuggling timber in Kupwara district of North Kashmir.
Last night police intercepted two vehicles of Territorial Army’s 160th Battalion bearing numbers 07C0812484 and 08C0832124 in Kupwara and seized them after they found them carrying timber.
Police registered a case against the army for smuggling timber (FIR number 115/2013 under Section 17, 9 RPC and 6 Forest Act). However, the seized vehicles were handed over to the Army.
Source said that police had received information about the felling of Devdar trees in dense forests of Kupwara and they were taking 300 cft of timber to their camp in Heeri.
A police team of Kupwara police headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Sajjad Khaliq and Station House Officer Inspector Gazanfar Hussain laid an ambush at Heeri on Kupwara-Chowkibal Road  around 11 p.m. last night and seized the smuggled timber.
A police spokesman said here that the case of the timber smuggling by Army is being investigated by Kupwara Police.
