Relief holders continue fast, JTC warns to intensify agitation

JAMMU, May 31: The relief holders and over-aged youth who are on protest for over two months now at Jagti township and in front of Relief Commissioner’s Office today criticized the Government for turning a deaf ear towards their demand.
Addressing the dharna at Jagti Ajay Bhat and O N Kaw resolved to take the present struggle to its logical conclusion. They said it is a pity that the relief holders are on chain hunger strike for last two months in these hot days when mercury has touched 43 degree Celsius the Government is unmoved to settle their demand. They warned to take an extreme step in case the demand was not conceded as it is very difficult for them to make their both ends meet in these tough days when prices have touched sky.
Bhat said that relief holders are not in a position to meet the schooling expenses of their children due to meager financial assistance given to them and demanded that Rs 120 be granted relief per soul per day.
Meanwhile Jagti Tenement Committee also came in support of the demand and accused the Government of testing the patience of displaced people. In a meeting today JTC chairman B L Raina and president, S L Pandita demanded immediate enhancement of cash relief and restoration of power supply to the township.
They made it clear that before asking the displaced Pandits to sign agreements the community be compensated for the losses suffered by it in 23 years of turmoil in shape of loss of crops and fruits.
The meeting said the visit of thousands of pilgrims to Kheer Bhawani is a testimony to the fact that community is willing to return but it is Government, which has failed to frame a policy of setting them at a single place.
The meeting warned that Jagti inmates will intensify agitation for restoration of and will not hesitate from taking any drastic step in this regard also
